Selectboard Meeting Tuesday September 16, 2014

7 P.M. – Town Office

Solar Power In New Haven, VT.

This Tuesday, a representative from Gro-Solar will present to the Selectboard their plans for two massive solar electricity generating facilities that they would like to construct in our town.

Counting those two, we are faced with another ten being proposed in New Haven. A number of those ten are in various stages of permitting with the Public Service Board. There may well be more being planned that we are not yet aware of.

To give you some sense of size of the two being discussed Tuesday night, the existing Cross Pollination facility generates 2.2 MW of power on 15 acres. You can see this one on the west side of route 7 North of the Junction.

The new facilities being discussed will each be 2 ¼ times larger. Each one will cover approximately 40 acres and contain about 30,000 solar panels.

The other eight plants under consideration are all smaller than this – but well above the small installations you see near some of our homes.

The tax revenue these facilities will generate will be a pittance, thanks to legislation passed by the Legislature this year.

The Town of New Haven has little, if any, direct control over these facilities. It is worth noting that the two new massive facilities being planned are over 16 times larger than recommended by the town plan. But, the Selectboard and Planning Commission can intervene with the Public Service Board to protect the interest of our town.

If you have any interest in solar generating facilities in New Haven, I encourage you to attend Tuesday night at 7 P.M.

This message was sent by me. Even though I am on the Selectboard, this message was not approved by, nor represents the position of, the Selectboard. I sent this under my own personal concern for our town and the desire that you be made aware of what is happening in New Haven.
