The Mad River Valley Anti Racism Initiative (MRVARI) will hold its monthly meeting this evening, Nov. 26, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, at the Village Meeting House (ground floor of Waitsfield Church). All are welcome.
Many people have a hard time asking, learning, and talking about racism. This is especially true for white Americans. While many of us are aware that there is a dreadful predicament in our country, and would wish to fix it if we could, the fear of making mistakes often keeps us silent. The truth is, we were never taught to talk properly and openly about this important issue. Therefore, although most of us long for positive change, we struggle to find our way into the work.
At MRVARI, we believe that great change begins with engaging in conversations that are frank, caring, and that push our thinking in exciting, transformative ways. Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai remarked: "The best way to solve problems and to fight against war is through dialogue." I agree, and I believe that small-scale, neighborly conversations can lead to profound and vital change in the world.
MRVARI meets on the 4th Sunday of every month. We will not be meeting in December due to the holidays but will resume our collective commitment to anti-racist engagement in late January.
I hope to see you tonight!
