Annual Winter Bird Count

Past event
Dec 15, 2023, 8 AM to 4 PM

Hello Bird Lovers:
It's that time of year again! The thermometer is showing winter like temperatures, and snow is in the forecast for later in the week. The Mad Birders are in the planning stages for their annual year end bird count and want to know if you wish to participate. Our count this year will be on Friday December 15th from 8AM to 4PM, with a snow date in the (Highly Unlikely) event of a weather delay of Monday December 18th.

As you may recall, last year the Mad Birders changed the name of our count to the Winter Bird Count, (WBC) in order to be more inclusive, but we still report our results to Audubon as part of their annual Christmas Bird Count.

We'd love your help either as a "Field Team Member" (which entails spending a full or half day out in the field looking for birds) or as a "Feeder Watcher" counting the birds that come to your home feeder(s) for a minimum of 30 minutes. Please reply to this email if you are interested or have questions. (If you've already been in contact with us about this year's Count, no need to reply.)
To find out if you reside inside our "Count Circle" let me know your street address and if your home is inside the circle we can add your feeder birds to our numbers. (We have a specific protocol you'll have to follow, but it is easy!)

At this point in time we need Field Team Birders for the following sectors in the following numbers, so if you want to be on a Field Team, let me know if you have a preference for which sector you will bird.

Waitsfield South - 1 Field Team member needed
Fayston - 1 Field Team member needed
Warren - 2 Field Team members needed
Northfield East - 3 Field Team members needed

You can reply directly to me with your preference for participation in the count (either as a Field Team Member or a Feeder Watcher.
The Mad Birders look forward to hearing from you.

Jeannie Elias
