Neighbors,
The Burlington City Council is voting on the $43 million expansion of the McNeil biomass plant to heat the UVMMC on Monday, as well as an ordinance for building decarbonization. The spirit of that ordinance is to reduce emissions, but it actually incentivizes the use of "renewable" natural gas, biomass, biofuels, and other dirty, highly emitting forms of energy.
Burlington needs to implement truly clean sources of energy like wind and solar. Ensuring that we keep a plant open for decades to come— a plant that is burning our first line of defense against the climate crisis (trees)— is seriously irresponsible, at best.
What can you do? Email ALL of the city councilors. Better yet, also come out the city council meeting for the public comment period on Monday at 7:30 and make your voice heard! You can attend in person and sign up to speak in the Contois Auditorium, or speak via zoom.
We cannot settle for this. I am 23 and have been inspired by the civic involvement of my neighbors of all ages in the Five Sisters over the last year of living in this community. I have a great deal of fear around what the future holds, as I know many of us do. We can tell our leadership that we truly believe that Burlington can do better. This is an opportunity to tangibly affect the trajectory of our city, and our place in the fight against the climate crisis.
Please come speak out! Thanks.
