The Abenaki Community has inhabited, hunted, fished, planted, and gathered the lower Missisquoi River basin for many millennia. Join Dr. Frederick Wiseman as he introduces the history and ecology of the region's indigenous people. Wiseman will first briefly discuss the Abenaki culture and its many millennia of occupying the Wildlife refuge and its environs, then delve into a bit of the ways that early farmers cultivated their crops and hunted and fished the Missisquoi and Charcoal Creek. Using family photographs from the late 19th and 20th century, he will then discuss how his family spent its time on the river with rifle, shotgun, and fishline to bring home its bounty. The lecture will be supplemented by a PowerPoint slide show, demonstrations and exhibits of original Abenaki artifacts. A question-and-answer opportunity follows the presentation.
