Rick Winston on Ernest Lubitsch Comedies
Ernest Lubitsch was a well-known and extremely sophisticated Hollywood director during the 1930s and 40s. It is said that he often set his films in Europe believing that more conservative American audiences would tolerate more racy behavior from European characters.
Under the auspices of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), Rick Winston presents the first of a three-film series, Trouble in Paradise, on Wednesday, November 15 at 1:30 pm at the Savoy Theater. This 1932 rom-com, produced before Hollywood imposed codes, is considered a masterpiece―with inventive plotting and, of course, a love-triangle.
The series will continue on November 29 and December 6 with The Shop Around the Corner and To Be or Not to Be. You may register for any or all of the films for $8 apiece. Registration should be done online ahead of time or by mail to UVM OLLI. Or, if you decide to drop in at the last moment, you may send a check or pay online after the fact.
