Whammy Bar & Skinny Pancake

My old friends Franklin Heyburn and Ethan Azarian are joining me for a couple of informal music sessions this Saturday and Sunday at The Whammy Bar and Skinny Pancake. (Details below.)

Franklin and I played in a band called Sweet Corn Broadcasters during the late seventies into the nineties. We played lots of contra dances and sang folk and old time songs in coffeehouses & festivals. We almost always had a good time, and at times got close to being pretty good.

Franklikn plays fiddle. As some of you know I play an eccentric small squeezebox called a concertina, and sing.

Ethan Azarian I used to know in the seventies when he was still a barefoot boy, joining in on old-time music on guitar and tenor banjo at the family home in Cabot. His mother is a well known artist, his father a pure folk spirit. Ethan was playing a kind of grunge-punk-outlaw rock music with his brother and cronies during the 80s indie rock boom in Burlington, his band was called The Hollywood Indians. Now he's a singer -songwrite and artist in Austin, and is bringing out his sixth or seventh album of original music.

It happens we're all in the same area at the same time, Franklin now lives up past Maple Corners, and Ethan is visiting the family compound near Calais Elementary, until he goes back to Austin in a couple of weeks.

We have played together in different configurations in the past, but these days we mostly play different kinds of music from each other. (To many-- including my late mother-- they would all sound the same, but take my word for it, they're quite different.) We enjoy each others' company, and we have a number of songs and tunes in common, and we're going to take a run at playing in public on Saturday and Sunday, for tips.

Come if you're curious. We will try to make music as good as what happens at our parties.
