On Sunday, October 15th, Amanda Gustin, the featured speaker at the annual meeting of the Brookfield Historical Society, will present "Justin Morgan's Horse: Making an American Myth." All Morgan horses today trace their lineage back to a single horse: a mystery stallion named Figure, owned by singing teacher Justin Morgan in the late 18th century. But who was Figure, really? What stories have people told about him in the two centuries since he lived and worked in Vermont? Amanda Gustin of the Vermont Historical Society will explore the story of the Morgan horse--a complicated and fascinating story tied up with the idea of Vermont identity, the relationship between humans and animals, the creation of American myth, and much more.

A Vermont Humanities Council event hosted by Brookfield Historical Society in the Fellowship Hall of the Brookfield Pond Village Church, 49 Ridge Rd, 4:00 p.m. Gary Lord, (802) 276-3927. This talk is free, open to the public, and accessible to those with disabilities. Following the program, all are invited to a community potluck supper in the Fellowship Hall of the church.
