Award-winning Russian Photojournalist Dmitri Beliakov will present his powerful war photos at Ilsley Tuesday, October 17 at 7:00PM
Born in Russia in 1970 and currently a refugee living in Vermont, Beliakov is one of only two Russian photographers to document both the Second Chechen war (1999-2010) and the early Ukrainian conflict (2014-19) from all sides: the armed resistance, Russian regular troops, pro-Kremlin loyalists, and civilians.
His talk asks, "Why does the conflict in Ukraine look so much like that in Chechnya?" His goal is to provide, through his powerful photographs, the tragic link between the two, and to explain how the Chechen war foreshadowed today's horrific events in Ukraine.
Says Beliakov of his work, "Photojournalism appeals to vision to give voice to the defenseless and build connections between strangers."
Hosted by AAUW (American Assn. of University Women) and Ilsley Library, and helped by a grant from Middlebury's Neat Repeats, Beliakov's slide presentation is titled "Different Blood, Same Tactics: Putin's Chechnya and Ukraine Wars." Discussion will follow the photo presentation. In-person in the Jessica Swift community room of Ilsley Library on Tuesday, October 17 at 7PM. Free and open to the public. Come be part of an engaging evening.
