We've had three workdays so far this fall, and have three more planned, including Sunday, Oct 15. We've cleared the uptrack, the collector trail at the base of the slopes, and most of the intermediate terrain. Next we'll be turning our focus to some of the steeper slopes and glades.
In our early years, we had to do a lot of work just to get the former slopes skiable, mainly by cutting small saplings. Now we need to maintain that progress, knocking back woody growth like hobblebush that eagerly tries to fill in what we've just opened. We've invested in some power equipment, like heavy duty brush cutters, that makes this work go quickly. If you want to try out some of this equipment, this is your chance. We also need folks who can "swamp" (haul the cut debris into piles) and people with hand tools. Only people with US Forest Service chainsaw certifications can use chainsaws on Dutch Hill projects.
Join us on Sunday from 9:00-3:00. Meet in the parking lot on Route 100 in Readsboro at the base of the ski area. You'll need to have a hard hat and gloves. We have a few loaners available. Use your own favorite tool or borrow one of ours. Bring water and lunch or a snack, and a pack to carry gear. We eat lunch up on the mountain.
This is the last Sunday workday this season. The final two will be on Saturdays: Oct 28 and Nov 4. Questions? Contact us at info@dhash4vt.org
