Coming up Thursday on Central Vermont Community Radio: How can protecting consumers keep honest people from working? And how can home buyers find their dream home in this tight market?
9:00 - 10:00 am
In a report, the Institute for Justice says, "For millions of lower-income Americans, state licensing laws make finding work or opening a small business harder and more expensive—if not outright impossible. These laws force would-be workers in fields like barbering, landscaping, interior design and many more to get a government permission slip—an occupational license—before they can legally work. To do so, they often must complete costly training, pass exams, pay fees and more." Yet the report authors also point to Vermont as doing a good job of balancing the consumer protection that comes from state regulation of occupations with keeping barriers to working low. Guests Kevin Rushing and Lauren Layman of the state's Office of Professional Regulation explain how Vermont balances these interests—and how massage therapy is a great example of how a firm but gentle regulatory touch can achieve that balance.

In the current tight housing market, buying a home can be daunting—especially if it's your first home. The HomeOwnership Center at Downstreet Housing and Community Development offers a wide range of services and tips to home buyers—at no cost. HomeOwnership director Cheryl Moyer will describe how they can help home buyers, what to look for in a home that might not be intuitive, how to ensure that the home you buy is in good shape—and why some people might prefer renting to buying.
Moyer will also be part of a presentation by Downstreet on home ownership at the Capital City Grange this Saturday at 5 pm, which people can attend in person or on Zoom.
