HISTORIC SALEM COURTHOUSE WELCOMES ARTIST ROSE KLEBES
On Friday October 6th, the Historic Salem Courthouse invites the public to an exhibition and reception showcasing the works of Cambridge, NY, artist Rose Klebes. Entitled, "A Color Fest, As Rose Sees It," this vibrant display of plein air (painting in the open air) paintings makes a perfect ending to the 2023 gallery shows. The reception runs from 5:00-7:30 pm. Light refreshments are provided and wine and beer are available for purchase. Although entry is free, donations to support the many programs and events at the Courthouse are greatly appreciated.
Rose has been a resident of Washington County for 45 years. She and her husband Richard raised their children here and when there was time in her busy life, Rose always turned to expressing herself artistically. She painted with different media, such as watercolors or acrylics. She also makes and hand paints furniture, works with mosaic tile and has tried her hand at weaving and sculpture.
The last five years she has been working in oils in a serious way, with more concentrated time available in her life; local landscapes, scenes from her backyard, and area farmland provide the inspiration. Painting in the open air, she says, prevents her from the "overthinking" that may take place in her studio. She paints daily, whether inside or out, and says that "I mostly paint landscapes and still life but I also enjoy painting people." Rose is mostly self-taught, but she has received valuable advice and mentorship from some well-known local artists, such as George Van Hook, Cynthia Rosen, and Virginia McNeice. Her work has been shown in such venues as the Southern Vermont Art Center, the Valley Artisans Market, the Canfield Gallery in Arlington, and at Landscapes for Landsake. "If I didn't create every day, there's no reason to get out of bed," she asserts. Many of the pieces of colorful art displayed at this show will be for sale at affordable prices, benefitting both the artist and the Courthouse.
This show marks the end of a very successful 2023, and the Courthouse Board wishes to thank the dedicated Committee members—Hannie Varosy, Heather Bellanca, and Tom Kerr—for their inspiration and countless hours devoted to providing the public with such a wonderful variety of free exhibits. The Courthouse will be decorated for the holidays, beginning with the Craft Fair November and carrying through the "Love and Light" Memorial Tree Ceremony on December 9th; please see the Courthouse website for more information. The 2024 season of exhibits will kick off on the first Friday in April.
