Words Out Loud Poetry with Nadell Fishman & Sydney Lea

Past event
Oct 1, 2023, 3 to 4 PM

Please join us for the final Sunday afternoon of this year's reading series WORDS OUT LOUD: Poetry, Place & the Passage of Time.

This weekend's readers will be poets Nadell Fishman and Sydney Lea, former Vermont State Poet Laureate. We're delighted to welcome each to Calais to share their poems out loud.

PLEASE NOTE: Sydney has asked that folks kindly mask up as he has overseas travel planned for days just after the reading. And, as Covid has not disappeared, let's try to help one another stay well. Please wear a mask brought from home, or take one from those we'll make available at the door.

3:00 p.m.
Old West Church
758 Old West Church Road

Layers for comfort, face masks, and sturdy shoes for uneven terrain recommended for everyone's comfort. Arrive a wee bit early for ease of parking and seating.

Reception to follow the readings down the road at the Kent, a chance to nibble, sip, take in the art, meet the poets, and purchase or have them sign books you may already own.

A BIT ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:

NADELL FISHMAN's books of poetry include "Drive" (2001), "At Work in the Bridal Industry" (2011), and her newest collection, "Traveling, Traveling," published by Finishing Line Press in December 2022. Fishman has taught writing and literature for many years through Vermont College's Adult Degree Program and has co-led (with poet Baron Wormser) weekend gatherings focusing on the work of Jane Kenyon, Robert Frost, Sylvia Plath, and Ann Sexton.

SYDNEY LEA, a founding editor of "New England Review," served as Vermont's Poet Laureate from 2011 to 2015 and received Vermont's 2021 Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts. He has published twenty-four books: a novel, five volumes of personal and three of critical essays, and sixteen poetry collections, including "Pursuit of a Wound" (a 2001 Finalist for The Pulitzer Prize in poetry) and, most recently, "What Shines" (Four Way Books, NYC, 2023). His sixth book of personal essays, "Such Dancing as We Can," is due in late 2023, and his second novel, "Now Look," in spring of 2024.

A BIT OF GRATITUDE from moi:

For help around last Sunday's poetry readings: Thanks so much to the docents of Art at the Kent, to the Old West Church Association, to Barbara McAndrew and Brian Clark for assistance with parking, to Jody Gladding for joining me for introductions for what was a very special set of readings, to Kate Burnim for help at the OWC and with books, to the "Traces" curators Allyson Evans, Nel Emlen, and David Schutz for all their curating and cultivating in Kents' Corner to make so much variety in the arts grow right here in our Calais backyard.
