The third Nature Literacy program sponsored by the Huntington Public Library and the Huntington Conservation Commission will take place on Saturday, September 30 from 10:00 - noon in the Huntington Community Forest.
UNDERSTANDING RIVERS
Intact rivers with channels framed by boulders and large wood are critical for healthy fish and wildlife and the well-being of human communities but Vermont's land use and river management histories have left many rivers in a degraded condition lacking large wood structure. Join us for a walk along the Community Forest brook to talk about the physical characteristics of rivers, how humans have altered them, and how we can improve their physical condition by restoring wood structure to improve water quality, fish and wildlife habitat and storage of water thereby reducing downstream flooding. We will also take a closer look at some of the aquatic creatures.
We are pleased that our Huntington neighbors, Shayne Jaquith and Heather Pembook will be our guides.
Shayne worked as a river scientist for 16 years with the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation's Rivers Program, and the past eight years with the Nature Conservancy. His work has focused on management and restoration of rivers to provide water quality, fish and wildlife habitat and increased flood resiliency of Vermont's communities.
Heather supervises the Biomonitoring Section of the Watershed Management Division and has worked as an aquatic biologist for the past 28 years. Her work focuses on the health of flowing waters by assessing the macroinvertebrate and fish communities throughout Vermont. She also spent 22 years assessing the impact of the Clean Air Act on remote acid rain lakes in Vermont.
Registration is required for attending this workshop. Please email or call the Huntington Public Library to sign up - hpl@gmavt.net - 802-434-4583. Upon registration you will be given location and parking information. Please leave your dogs at home.
