Memphremagog Watershed Association to Host an Autumn News and Brews

Memphremagog Watershed Association (MWA) will be hosting the second in a series of News and Brews about the Memphremagog Watershed. The Autumn event will take place, Saturday, October 7, 2023, from 4:30 - 7 PM.

This Autumn News and Brews will enjoy the backdrop of our "beautiful waters" from the decks of the Norther Star. The Northern Star will be docked at the Gateway Center for the evening so that our special guest Ms. Louise Abbott will present and comment on her documentary film The Islands of Lake Memphremagog: A Natural and Human History. Ann Davidson of the Sherbrooke Record comments that "…Abbott highlights the inherent bond of people to their physical surroundings. She brings out the spiritual element within the subject matter. She helps to see the correlation of the past and the present in an attempt to look forward."

In addition to Ms. Abbott's presentation MWA staff will give brief updates on our work since the successful April event at Kingdom Brewery.

All are invited to enjoy this evening. Complimentary appetizers will be available as well as a cash bar. In the event of extreme inclement weather, the event will move to the second floor of the Gateway Center. So, see you rain or shine!

Please RSVP to marypat@mwa.org so we can estimate seating and appetizers.

Louise Abbott is a writer, documentary photographer, and documentary filmmaker based in Ogden, Quebec. She is the author of seven books, including Memphremagog: An Illustrated History (Volumes 1 and 2).

Ms. Abbott sees her true vocation as "giving expression to the lives and concerns of people in outlying regions. My documentary work in rural communities in Quebec (the Lower North Shore of the St. Lawrence, the Gaspé, and the Eastern Townships) as well as in Newfoundland has resulted in photo essays, books, films, and multimedia projects." Ms. Abbot has been recognized for these works by international film festivals and broadcasts on PBS stations.

Since the summer of 2022, Louise has been working for the Whiteley Museum in St. Paul's River on a series of short documentaries about the history and way of life of the region. She is currently writing a book titled Islands of History about the eastern archipelagos of the Lower North Shore from Old Fort to Blanc-Sablon.
