The Calais Lakes and Streams Committee (CLSC) is meeting at G.A.R. Memorial Hall on the shores of No. 10 Pond next Thursday, September 21st at 6 pm. We hope that you will join us! The meeting will begin with a short presentation on the history and future of Memorial Hall led by Rowan Jacobsen, well-known author and shoreline resident.
Calais lakes and streams remain beautiful and healthy places. Besides the recreational opportunities we enjoy, they sustain diverse populations of mammals, fish, amphibians and plants. Still, there are challenges ahead. Non-native invasive plants and animals threaten to cause irreversible deterioration of these waters. Some invasives are already here and many are near Calais borders. Poisonous blue-green algae, which closes beaches in Lake Champlain every summer, could easily take over Calais lakes if pollution increases. The CLSC is dedicated to preserving our lakes and streams as healthy waters for decades to come. We are hoping that more lovers of these natural treasures will join our efforts so that future generations don't lose what we now enjoy.
At the meeting, we will talk about the path ahead, restarting our newsletter, and hear ideas/ concerns from neighbors.
