Moosalamoo National Recreation Area Guided Hikes

Past event
Sep 14 to 17, 2023

Below is the schedule for this coming weekend's guided hikes through the Moosalamoo National Recreation Area. More details will be provided here each Tuesday for the hikes scheduled for that week.

NOTICE: There is the potential for bad weather this weekend as a result of Hurricane Lee, including rain and high wind gusts. I will be posting an update the day before and the morning of hikes if hurricane/tropical storm conditions make any hikes potentially unsafe to complete.

Thursday - 09/14/2023 - Silver Lake Trail - Start time 1pm - Trash Clean Up Hike
Starting at the Silver Lake parking area on Rt. 53, this hike will be 5.3 miles total and passes by the Falls of Lana. This will be a chance to clean up trash found along the trail. Gloves and trash bags will be provided; I will take all trash back with me to properly dispose of.

Friday - 09/15/2023 - Robert Frost Interpretive Trail - start time 11am
Meet at the Robert Frost parking area in Ripton to do a 1.2-mile (easy) guided hike along the interpretive trail. The hike features poetry and information on Robert Frost, and we will talk briefly on Frosts connection to Vermont and the poetry the state inspired. An optional poetry writing session will occur at the end of the hike; paper and pencils will be provided if you would like to write a short poem inspired by the works of Robert Frost or by the sites on our trail, but feel free to bring your own.

Saturday - 09/16/2023 - Chandler Ridge/Leicester Hollow Loop - Start time 10am
This hike will be the longest one offered for the guided hikes this season. Starting at the Minnie Baker Trailhead, we will hike to Silver Lake via the Chandler Ridge Trail and return using the Leicester Hollow trail to create a loop. The loop will take about 4 ½ hours to complete and is 10.2 miles total. If, day of, anyone wants to complete the hike at a shorter overall distance, we can complete Leicester Hollow trail as an out and back trail for a total of 7.3 miles and about a 3 ½ hour hiking time.

While hiking, we will take the time to identify bird calls and learn about the fall migration season here in VT. I will be using the app called Merlin to identify different birds; if you would like to participate, download the app and be sure to download at least the North Eastern bird guide before attending the hike.

Sunday - 09/17/2023 - Ethan Allan Cave - start time 1pm
Meet at Branbury State park for a hike to the fabled Ethan Allan Cave, and learn about the story behind it's fame, as well as the history of the man it's named for. Notice - this hike is poorly blazed and fairly muddy in poor conditions. It will take some navigating to get to, so be prepared to hike in areas that are not well-maintained.

If you have any questions prior to the hike, feel free to email me through Front Porch Forum or at charlieslack2324@gmail.com. For day-of information, questions, or concerns, text or call at 757-707-0783. Please save phone number for day-of questions and information.
