Join our growing earth repair community this sunday Sept. 10 for two events.
At the Pine Street Barge Canal on Unceded Abenaki Territory in Burlington VT.
1. Ecological Restoration Workshop. 10am-1pm
Learn non-chemical, mechanical ways to remove nonnative species to support habitat rejuvenation for overall site restoration, eventual remediation and rematriation of this fragile urban, riparian habitat. Connect with community as we continue our efforts to care for this degraded site while practicing crucial earth repair skills. Learn safety protocols, technical techniques, and botanical identification skills. Bring work gloves, water, option eye protection, and tools if you have them (pruners, oppers, saws, axes..). Wear sturdy boots, long socks, pants/sleeves for sun, tick and poison ivy protection.
2, Community Sciencen 2-4 pm
Calling all seasoned to newbie naturalists to join in this community effort to gather accurate ecological inventory of who is living on this fragile urban wild for long term conservation, restoration, remediation, and rematriation aims. Wear long sleeved pants and shirts and water resistant sturdy foot wear. No flipflops nor sandals! Bring field guides, binoculars, handlenses, and your phone if you want to enter data into our 2 INaturalist projects. Bring any water, snacks, and ecofriendly sun & insect protection you may need.
Because both sites we are inventorying are Superfund sites, wear footwear you can leave outside for 2 days on your porch. Note: the toxins are below the soil surface but in case any particulates enter the tread of your shoes, this is an extra precaution we encourage all site visitors to take.
If you have expertise in a particular area of natural history identification (i.e. ornithology, macroinvertebrates...) reach out to Jess so we can set you up to lead the group that day!
All ages and abilities are welcome!
Location: People have gotten lost getting here. Best bet is to meet at the silver gate across form Dealer.com on Pine Street. Please be on time for opening circle for either or both events and dress appropriately!
Thanks to @NEGrassroots Environmental Fund for supporting this event!
