Love opera? Join the Vermont Italian Cultural Association (VICA) and The Opera Company of Middlebury (OCM) as they co-host a discussion with Tom Cipullo, an American composer who is renowned for his vocal music, including the opera Glory Denied. The opera will be performed by the Opera Company of Middlebury this fall. Filippo Ciabatti, the Music Director at OCM, and Alexandra Dietrich, the Stage Director of Glory Denied, will join Tom in the discussion. OCM Artistic Director Douglas Anderson will facilitate the discussion.
The 19th-century opera was often broken down into two models: German and Italian. In modern times, are there remnants of these two styles in contemporary opera? If so, does being Italian or Italian-American influence how composers write and how singers and instrumentalists perform current works, even if the themes and subjects of those works are not Italian? What are the traditions that endure over time and across great distances that sustain an "Italian sound and sensibility?"
