Join area students at the Factory Point Town Green on Friday, September 15 at 12:30 PM to participate in the Global Climate Strike. The idea originated with Greta Thunberg's group Fridays for Future, who demanded a reduction of carbon emissions to prevent future heating of our planet. This will be the first Climate Strike since 2019. It is more evident this year, with the flooding, fires and heat waves across the world, that our planet is in crisis. Today's students—young adults and young children alike—will be impacted by worsening climate troubles if we do not take immediate action to stop the climate changes that we are already experiencing.
This action will require substantive changes in how we produce our energy and live our lives. Fortunately, there are now options for replacing fossil fuels—weatherizing our homes, upgrading heating systems to heat pumps, and using electric cars and mass transit. To meet the increased demand for electricity, we have more efficient and cheaper renewable solar and wind, thereby reducing carbon emissions. We need to make these changes in our own lives, in town planning, and in state and federal legislation. We need to lower our emissions and adjust our consumption, not just of fossil fuels, but of all our planet's resources. Otherwise, what will be left for the next seven generations?
Listen to speakers at 1:00 pm and then rally around the Northshire Bookstore roundabout with signs and noisemakers. Let's gather with our children and grandchildren and show them our support. Let's show kids that we care about their future. Let's show kids that we will take action. Let's show kids that we are willing to change our lives to save theirs!
