Please consider joining Vermonters for the annual Walk to Defeat ALS on Saturday, September 23rd at Oakledge Park.
Did you know:
- ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis aka Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
- ALS takes away the ability to walk, dress, write, speak, swallow, and breathe.
- 6,000 people are diagnosed with ALS each year and nearly 20,000 Americans are living with ALS today.
- Veterans are twice as likely to get ALS and the VA recognizes this as a service-connected disease.
- 90% of all cases of ALS are sporadic, meaning there is no family history of the disease.
- Every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with ALS. In the same period of time, someone will pass away from ALS.
- There are possible links between the toxins released by cyanobacteria blooms — or blue-green algae — and ALS cases.
- As of this year, Vermont has a mandatory ALS registry so that more research can be conducted on potential clusters due to environmental risk factors.
This will be my 2nd year attending the "Walk for ALS" sponsored by the Northern New England Chapter of the ALS Association. My Team is committed to raising money to support people in our community with ALS and spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure.
If you wish to go above and beyond, please feel free to join my team "Danny's Groove Crew" honoring my always dancing Dad who lost his battle with this disease in 2022.
