Relocalizing VT: the Powerful Hurricane of '38

Past event
Aug 31, 2023, 9 to 10:30 AM

Coming up Thursday on Central Vermont Community Radio: A new Habitat for Humanity duplex is being built in Randolph; a local author reminds us of the destructive power of the "Long Island Express," the hurricane of 1938 that devastated Vermont.

9:00 - 10:00 am
While volunteers and professionals are flocking to clean up and rebuild after Vermont's July floods, Central Vermont Habitat for Humanity is breaking ground on a new duplex next week. Director Zach Watson will talk about who will be moving in, how much "sweat equity" they're putting in, what it's like to attract building volunteers at a time like this, how people can apply to live in a future Habitat project, and more.

Our ground is still wet, Hurricane Idalia is pummeling Florida and other southeastern states, and there are three months left in the Atlantic hurricane season. What's the worst that could happen? For a sense of how destructive a hurricane can be here—including what 100 mph winds can do to our state—we turn to Corinth-based writer Stephen Long. In his book Thirty Eight, he tells the story of the "Long Island Express" hurricane that caught Vermonters unawares, knocked down forests, and became the most deadly and powerful hurricane ever recorded to have hit New England. He'll also talk about the book on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the annual meeting for the Robinson Sawmill, which will be held 12 - 3 pm at the Maple Corner Community Center.

10:00 - 10:30 am
Resilience Thoughts, a locally told Extempo story, and more. (If I can find it, I'll play a recording of the late Fred Cheyette and his weird experience as a child during the hurricane of 1938.)

Please tune in! Relocalizing Vermont runs Thursdays, 9:00 - 10:30 am Eastern, on WGDR Plainfield 91.1 FM / WGDH Hardwick 91.7 FM / streaming at wgdr.org, with on-demand streaming for two weeks after air date.
