A History of Dairy Farming in Brookfield, 1860's to the Present
Saturday, September 9, at 7pm
Join us at the Old Town Hall in Brookfield on September 9 at 7pm, for a deep dive into the history of farming in Brookfield told by Keith Sprague, a Brookfield native, representing the 5th generation to operate his family's dairy farm along the White River in Brookfield. In 1998 when his father John retired, Keith opted to take over the family farm, readily forsaking engineering for agriculture. Since then, under Keith's management, the dairy herd has grown from 100 to 700 milking cows. Keith was one of the first farmers in the region to adopt no-till cropping practices which combat soil erosion and run-off while nurturing microorganisms in the soil. In 2008 the Sprague dairy was designated Vermont Farm of the Year. Celebrate farming with this informative evening event.
