Emerald Ash Borer and Forest Management Walk at the Sayward Town Forest
Wednesday, September 27th at 5:15p.m.
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was found in Vermont in 2018. Since its discovery in the towns of Plainfield and Orange, it has been confirmed to be in all but one of Vermont's 14 counties. This forest pest will change the composition of our forests and change how we interact and manage them.
White ash makes up 15% of the forest cover at the Sayward Town Forest. A logging operation taking place this winter will help prepare the Sayward Town Forest for the arrival of EAB. Join us for a walk at the Sayward Town Forest to discuss management options with the coming threat of EAB. We will look at what management options have been chosen to mitigate the impact of EAB at Sayward. We will discuss the options forest landowners have, how to identify white ash in the fall and what signs to look for when identifying EAB. This is a chance to look at real measures forest landowners can take to make their forest more resilient to EAB.
AJ Follensbee Windsor/Orange County Forester will lead the walk. No registration is required to join the walk. We will cover around 1.5 miles on relatively gentle terrain and conclude at dusk. The walk will start at the parking area at the Sayward Town Forest. Bring some sturdy boots and your questions about Emerald
Ash Borer!
Directions to the town forest and more information about the Emerald Ash Borer can be found on the Conservation Commission's website.
