Putting Her Life on the Line to Change the World
Martha Hennessy: On her Civil Disobedience, Why She Did It, and What Must Change.

Women throughout history have stepped up to say, "no more," and to work toward change in our world.

In 1933, Dorothy Day (Ms. Hennessey's grandmother) started the Catholic Worker movement with Peter Maurin: publishing the Catholic Worker newspaper, offering houses of hospitality, and assisting people through works of mercy. They also joined street protests, and labor pickets, and picketed the German consulate in 1935.

In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white person.

In 2012, Malala Yousafzai, a 15-year-old Pakistani girl, was shot in the head in an assassination attempt due to her activism for girls' education. Her continued activism caused her to be the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.

In 2018, Greta Thunberg started spending her school days picketing alone outside the Swedish parliament to call for stronger action on climate change. Millions if not billions have now taken up her call.

On April 4th, 2018, Martha Hennessy joined 6 other Catholic activists on Kings Bay Naval Base where they broke in and performed a non-violent protest of symbolically hammering on statues of nuclear missiles, pouring blood, and hanging banners with messages against nuclear weapons.

Please join us for this discussion with Ms. Hennessy and learn more about her actions, her impetus, and her work to change the world.

This event is free and open to the public call the Library at (802)885-3108 if you have any questions.
