Born out of the Occupy Wall Street movement, The Brass Balagan was organized in 2010 as an affinity group to support community organized protests with well-played street music. Their mission is to play great music and support communities who seek social, economic and environmental justice and liberation. Brass Balagan's repertoire is rooted in Balkan and Jewish music, but has diversified considerably over the years. They play raucus, danceable tunes, with room for the occasional waltz, hora or circle dance. In addition to Balkan and Jewish numbers, their repertoire includes Colombian cumbias, Puerto Rican bombas, Mexican banda, Indian bhangra, ska, surf rock, an occasional pop or jazz number, and their versions of classic movement songs. Balagan performs mainly for anti-imperialist causes, but is also available for birthday parties, b'mitzvahs, shopping mall ribbon-cuttings, corporate functions, and traveling flea circuses. They are eternally recruiting new members and continually demand the immediate elimination of all EVIL!
