Past event
Aug 26, 2023, 6 to 7 PM

The John G. McCullough Free Library in North Bennington invites you to "Bees Besieged: A History of Beekeeping", a Vermont Humanities Council Speakers Bureau Talk hosted by Bill Mares. This presentation will be held at The Left Bank (5 Bank Street, North Bennington) this coming Saturday, August 26th at 6:00 PM. All are welcome to this free event. Light refreshments will be available.

Beekeeping goes back 10,000 years, but bees have been much in the news recently as a multi-pronged scourge has devastated many of the nation's 2.5 million colonies. Meanwhile, hobby beekeeping has grown exponentially in the country.

Bill Mares is a writer and has been a beekeeper for 45 years. In this presentation, he will tell of the origins and evolution of beekeeping, sometimes referred to as "farming for intellectuals," with a particular emphasis on his new book, with Ross Conrad, and others, "The Land of Milk and Honey, a History of Beekeeping in Vermont." (Green Writers Press).
