"Lucille, A Life Story"
Emily Bernard discusses the research for her upcoming book, Unfinished Women, an extended meditation on the dynamic between the expectations of traditional biographical writing and the lives of black women.
Dr. Bernard holds a PH.D. in American Studies from Yale University and is the Julian Lindsay Green and Gold Professor of English at the University of Vermont. Her most recent book, Black is the Body: Stories from My Grandmother's Time, My Mother's Time, and Mine won the 2020 LA Times Isherwood Prize for Autobiographical Prose. Her work has appeared in the New Yorker, the New Republic, Harper's, O the Oprah Magazine, the Boston Globe, and other publications.
