When: Aug 12, 2023, 8 AM to 12 PM
Where: Munger Street Cemetery, 2610 Munger Street, New Haven, VT
Volunteers are welcome to attend a workshop on Saturday, August 12, 8AM to Noon to learn how to clean gravestones and also how to straighten stones in New Haven's Munger Street Cemetery. The cemetery is located at 2610 Munger Street, New Haven, about a quarter mile north of Cobble Road, which is the Middlebury-New Haven town line.
Most of the work will be in the Old Yard. With its first recorded burial dating from 1797, the historic Old Yard section of the Munger Street Cemetery is the final resting place for some of Addison County's earliest settlers.
No experience is needed for this workshop. Instruction will be provided. Wear old clothes & bring rubber gloves, a water bucket, a plastic scrub brush and a wooden paint stirrer. Also, a spray bottle if you have one. You will learn how to use D/2 Biological Solution, a safe and effective product to clean all kinds of stone. The town's road crew will provide a 275-gallon tank of water. Parking is available for 8-10 cars on the grass between the road and cemetery fence. Additional parking will be available across the street at 2691 Munger Street.
Please email Ruth Penfield (ruthpenfield@gmail.com) if you can help or want to learn proper techniques for caring for old cemetery stones.
