Books are now available at the Craftsbury Public Library for a book discussion of True Biz, to take place on August 13, at 4pm. Stuart Soboleski will lead the discussion, with sign language interpretation provided.
True Biz, a novel by Sara Novic, provides insight into Deaf Culture through the lens of three characters: a teenager raised by hearing parents who has always had to assimilate into public school, her new friend who has been raised secure in his place in Deaf Culture, and their school principal, who is hearing and a child of deaf adults.
This is a story of sign language and lip-reading, disability and civil rights, isolation and injustice, first love and loss, and, above all, great persistence, daring, and joy. Absorbing and assured, idiosyncratic and relatable, this is an unforgettable journey into the Deaf community and a universal celebration of human connection.
