The Westmore Association is excited to host educator, drum maker, and culture bearer Micheal Descoteaux of the Nulhegan band of the Cooksuk Abenaki Tribe to share with us about the history and culture of the Abenaki people on Thursday, August 10th from 1-4 PM at the Westmore Fellowship Community Hall. This is a free program open to the public, suitable for adults, teens, and older children.

Michael will explore the early Abenaki life and culture, including travel, migration, where they lived, what they ate, and how they harvested food. Micheal will also dive into post-colonization life and unearth the new arrivals' impact on the Abanaki way of life. Both the positive and negative effects of changes in everyday living and their impacts on culture will be examined. Micheal will conclude with the modern era of the Abenaki people and their struggles to survive eugenics, boarding schools, and racism. He will speak about the struggles the Abenaki people face in the modern era and how they are retaining their culture and traditions
