From Chittenden County Forester Ethan Tapper:
"Old Growth Forests Event w/ the Vermont Land Trust!"
Hi all,
I'll be leading another free, public walk of the forest management project at the Catamount Community Forest this Thursday, July 27. For this one, I'll be partnering with the Vermont Land Trust to discuss how to use forest management to restore old growth characteristics to Vermont's young forests-- I hope to see you there! This week, you can also check out my takeover of the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation's Instagram account (@vtforestsparksrecreation). Each day for the next 7 days, I'll be posting a collaborative post with one of the partners that we've been working with to develop and celebrate the project at the Catamount Community Forest: the Vermont Land Trust, the University of Vermont's Rubenstein School for the Environment and Natural Resources, Audubon Vermont, Vermont Coverts, Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and City Market Coop. I'm excited to highlight the coalition of partners that are involved in this project, and to show how excited about it we all are!
My article for this month is called is called "What is Symbiosis?" You can read it here: https://mcusercontent.com/58398f7a782118e355bf99377/files/6df07b25-0ea1-fa93-1c4f-4adcdcd41a[...]pdf
Restoring Old Growth Characteristics w/ the Vermont Land Trust
Thursday, July 27, 6:00-8:00 PM
Join us to visit the site of an upcoming forest management project at the Catamount Community Forest in Williston. This project will involve managing a relatively young forest for old growth characteristics—creating the habitats and the qualities of an old growth forest centuries sooner than they would naturally occur—and will be part of a national research project studying how to manage forests in a changing climate.
We'll explore effective ways to manage our forests for resilience and adaptability while also achieving other goals, including biodiversity conservation, forest health, renewable resources, and bird habitat. We can help our forests stay healthy and productive while continuing to provide all the benefits we depend upon.
