Introduction to Ukrainian Embroidery

Past event
Jul 30, 2023, 9 AM to 1 PM

Embroidery is one of the oldest ways humans have been expressing their heart's desire and need to adorn themselves and all they touch. It dates back as far as 30,000 years (at least)!

Learn this beautiful craft and begin your journey into this rich and ancient world of adornment.

Join instructor Bozena of Kosa Kolektiv & Folk Camp Canada in a workshop introduction into the world of hand embroidery, learning the basics of counted embroidery and freeform "rushnyky stitches". In eastern Slavic tradition, the "rushnyk"-- an elaborately embroidered towel -- serves as a kind of magic talisman, to protect and bestow good luck on its owner. The patterns of embroidery were strictly regulated by tradition, replacing paper and ink with cloth and thread and preserving ancient symbols on clothing and kitchen towels.

This workshop is designed for beginners and will focus on learning best practices and gaining general familiarity with various materials and techniques used in embroidery, and specifically stitches used for rushnyky made with drawn forms.

We'll embroider from 9-12, then break for a potluck lunch and Q & A . Cost $55. To register, https://www.eventbrite.com/e/introduction-to-hand-embroidery-the-ukrainian-tradition-of-ritu[...]tor
