Relocalizing VT Thursday: Prevent Suicides & Flood Damage

Past event
Jul 20, 2023, 9 to 10:30 AM

Coming up Thursday on Central Vermont Community Radio: People who have tried suicide or have lost loved ones to suicide are working both to prevent suicide and help survivors and loved ones heal. And there's lots of healing of people, buildings, and land needed after the latest floods to hit Vermont. (Thanks to all the people who suggested guests on this topic; I plan to do a series of interviews, based on the suggestions.)

9:00 - 10:00 am
The Vermont chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is planning a series of "Out of the Darkness" walks in September and October. We'll talk with volunteers Terri Lavely and Eva Zaret about what makes people vulnerable to suicide, what can be done to prevent suicide, the kindest responses to friends and family when someone takes their own life, and the possibilities and challenges that natural disasters bring to people who are feeling suicidal.

What has Vermont done to increase long-term resilience to flooding events, and what remains to be done in the future? Lauren Oates now works at The Nature Conservancy, and she has a background in flood resilience work both for the Town of Waterbury and the State of Vermont.

10:00 - 10:30 am
Resilience Thoughts, a locally told Extempo story, and more.
