Cow Pasture - Proposed Ban

Past event
Aug 27, 2013, 7 PM

This Tuesday Aug. 27 at 7 p.m., the Barre City Council will consider banning motorized wheeled vehicles from the 67-acre city-owned forest and woodlands known as the Cow Pasture. During the last year, dirt bikes and/or ATVs have destroyed or damaged several areas of the Cow Pasture, including trail restoration and erosion control projects funded with grants that included the Semprebon Fund. In recent weeks, a central wetlands trail restored in 2012 by the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC) was destroyed and the restored lower-creek crossing repeatedly has been damaged by motorized wheels throughout the summer. In another part of the Cow Pasture, dirt bike ruts appeared on the new VYCC-created switchback trail two days after it opened to the public. Barre currently is the only Vermont city that allows motorized wheeled vehicles on public forest and wood lands. If you feel strongly, one way or the other, about this proposed ban, please attend this week's City Council meeting where the public will be encouraged to offer testimony.
