Many Vermonters are concerned about EV's because they have heard that range goes down as the weather gets colder. This is true but most owners find that the change is not dramatic, usually 10 to 15% — though some sources report that the reduction can be as much as 25 or 30%.
How do you compensate?
Many EV's have settings allowing you to schedule when to charge and when you are planning to drive. This allows the vehicle to "precondition" the battery. This is particularly true if you can charge at home.
Turn down the heat. If the car has seat heaters, they are more efficient than heating the entire cabin.
Go slower (which is not bad advice when the roads are icy).
In short, drive sensibly. No jackrabbit starts. Glide to a stop. Charge when you can.
Come discuss these and other issues at EV EXPO from 10 to 3 on Wallingford Day. Saturday July 15. It will be held in the driveway and parking lot of Baasch Dental, 42 North Main Street in Wallingford.
Hope to see you there.
