Forestry and Natural Resource Hike up Mt Philo

Join VT Coverts: Woodlands for Wildlife for a walk through the history of Mount Philo on Saturday August 16. Mount Philo is Vermont's oldest state park and boasts one of the Champlain Valley's best vistas. We'll start at the park entrance at 9:15 and walk to the summit. Along the walk we'll hear about the natural and human history of the park and how it reflects many of the forces that have shaped Vermont over the centuries. Our guides are Kate Lampton and Larry Hamilton. Kate has lived at the base of Mt. Philo for 40 years. She is an amateur historian on the Park and the Mt Philo Inn and has given talks on this and other land related issues. Larry Hamilton is a retired professor of forestry at Cornell University. He is a Senior Advisor for the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas and editor of the Mountain Protected Areas Update magazine and tree warden in Charlotte. We'll be walking the paved park road to the summit, a moderate walk of about an hour. There are plenty of great picnic spots on the top, so bring a lunch and drink and enjoy the views. Dress for the weather. Registration is requested but not required. For questions and more information, contact Coverts Cooperator Norm Riggs at (802) 425-4545 or Lisa Sausville (802) 877-2777 or lisa@vtcoverts.org.
