*"Stories in Stitches —What Samplers Have to Tell Us"*
*Union Hall, Newfane Village*
The Historical Society of Windham County invites you to join Ellen Thompson of the Vermont Sampler Initiative who will share the long history behind embroidery samplers. While samplers were used as a way for women to learn and practice embroidery skills, today they are historic records that give us insight into the lives, families, and communities of the 18th and 19th centuries. Michele and Ellen will also describe the work of the Vermont Sampler Initiative with museums across the State to document all American made samplers and related embroideries in Vermont with the aim to create an online and accessible database of 18th and 19th Century samplers (samplerarchive.org) for practitioners and scholars.
