This winter a logging operation is planned to take place at the Sayward Town Forest. The Sayward Town forest is located off Tatro Hill Rd in Randolph. This town forest is used by many in the community for recreation. The goals of the upcoming harvest are to shift the forest to a more natural state by removing part of the softwood plantation to release native tree growth. The harvest will also make the forest more resilient to Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) by reducing the number of ash trees in the forest and providing opportunities for new ash trees to become established.
This upcoming walk will give members of the community and forest landowner a chance to check out the forest before the harvest. During this walk will discuss the goals of harvest and how they will be achieved through active management. Our goals include increasing forest resilience, increasing species diversity, mitigating the impacts of EAB, managing for old growth characteristics, and maintaining and enhancing wildlife habitat.
AJ Follensbee Windsor/Orange County Forester and the Randolph Conservation Commission will lead the walk through the Sayward Town Forest. No registration is required to join the walk. We will cover around 1.5 miles on relatively gentle terrain and conclude at dusk. The walk will start at the parking area at the Sayward Town Forest. Bring some sturdy boots and your questions about forest management!
See our website for more specific directions to the Town Forest. It's about 1.5 miles up from Shaw's, on the left.
