The June meeting of the Arlington Historical Society will present the history of the Carthusian Monastery on Mt. Equinox and the role of Dr. Joseph Davidson in its development. The Carthusian Order was founded in France by St. Bruno of Cologne in 1084. The monastery on Mt. Equinox was the first Carthusian house established in the Western Hemisphere. Dr. Davidson donated 7,000 acres, including 4,000 in Sandgate, for use of the order. Davidson also created Skyline Drive to allow access to the top of the mountain. We will review some of the rules governing daily life of the monks, construction, and Dr. and Mrs. Davidson's role in preserving the natural beauty of Mt. Equinox.
Members of the public that recall the early days of the development are encouraged to attend and share their experiences.
The meeting will be held on June 25th at 2:00 p.m. in the Sandgate Meeting Room, Martha Canfield Memorial Library. Recent donations to the Russell Vermontiana Collection will be presented as well as plans for the August USS Bennington and Arlington's World War II Experience.
