Middlebury Community Players Company Be Summer Season is getting ready to premiere next Thursday! The first production of the summer is "Red," the Tony award-winning play by John Logan, happening at the Vergennes Opera House with evening performances starting June 22–24 at 7:30 pm and ending on June 25 at 2 pm.
It's 1959. Mark Rothko, the American Abstract expressionist (along with his brash young assistant) is working on a commission for a series of murals by the then-under-construction Four Seasons Restaurant. Rothko struggles to justify accepting this commission—the biggest mural commission since the Sistine Chapel—with his ascetic and anti-materialistic beliefs. For Rothko, art is a visceral, tactile and cerebral experience—an apt description for this play as well! Starring Lonny Edwards and Ethan DeWitt and directed by Kevin Commins. Tickets are $10 at the door (cash or check only, please).
