A CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE IN POETRY OF GALWAY KINNELL. Everyone is invited. Thursday, August 7, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm, The Vermont Statehouse, 115 State Street, Montpelier.
Galway Kinnell was Poet Laureate of Vermont from 1989 to 1993. He has won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. I've attended many of his readings. He knows many of his poems by heart. It is great to watch him on this clip read “The Bear” at the Thomas Jefferson College International Poetry Festival in 1973

From Jerry:
I first met Galway on the Kiwanis tennis courts in St. Johnsbury in the early '90s. We played fun doubles a few times with Don Bredes and Norm Martel. After playing one day, I asked Galway what he would rather do, play tennis or write poetry. He replied with "I'd just like to get my first serve in!" That evening I wrote "Ode to a First Serve Going In," spoofing a bit his "When One Has Lived A Long Time Alone" poem (which I love!) I called and read my poem to him. He got a kick out of it and encouraged me to publish a book of poems. Also during the '90s I invited Galway to read at Fitchburg State University where I taught. It was an honor for me to introduce him to a packed house.
Here is the poem I dedicated to our former Vermont Poet Laureate.
Hope to see you on Thursday! Kindly pass the word.
Warm regards,
Jerry
