Hidden Gardens of 693 Lewis Creek Road in Hinesburg will be open to community members for viewing this Sunday 10-4. This is a self-guided exploration.
This garden is carved out of woods and wetlands and is laid out in two levels. The gardens are tied together with a shady cascading watercourse with paths and a stone bridge that leads to the upper and lower gardens. Around the house curving paths wind through an extensive collection of hostas, shrubs, and perennials which lead to open lawn, a varied conifer garden, and a sunken stone-wall garden. The lower garden is reached by taking either a path past a stone wall and down under a canopy of mature evergreens, or the watercourse walkway that is underplanted with woodland flowers, ferns, and flowering shrubs. Here collections of heather, ornamental grasses, damp-loving plants, conifers, and water lilies have transformed a meadow into an abundant garden embracing a reflecting pond, a trout pond, and a "fishing camp," all enclosed in a canyon in the woods.
Please park on the side of the road and walk up the driveway or enter on the lower level. Parking is available by the house for those who are unable to walk up the driveway. The host Peter McNaull is happy to help shuttle people via golf cart between the upper and lower levels if needed(the pathways are hilly and the ground is uneven).
If you have questions about this event, please respond to Susan Lepple via this post. Enjoy!
