Astronomy Notes – Moon Observing Night, May 26 or 30

Past event
May 26, 2023, 8 PM

The Lamoille County Star Gazers are pleased to announce a public observing night at the Grout Observatory at Peoples Academy in Morrisville. We'll look at the moon overall but focus on specific types of features including:

• Maria (lava-flooded plains), specifically Mare Crisium.
• The area where Apollo 17 landed.
• Traditional craters, like Theophilus and Cyrillus on the west side of Mare Nectaris.
• Broken craters whose walls have been breached by other impacts or lava flows, like Julius Caesar.

The session will take place on Friday, May 26, or, in case of bad weather, Tuesday, May 30. We'll start observing at 8 PM and continue until about 9 or so. To check on the status of the session, check to see if the moon is clearly visible. If it is, we're on. You can also check Front Porch Forum or our Facebook page, or email lcvtsg@gmail.com.

Notes:

• The observatory is on the small knoll on the right as you drive up Copley Avenue and enter the circle in front of the main building.
• Park in the student parking lot by the bandshell.
• Watch your step on the path leading up to the observatory.
• Bring a flashlight but try not to turn it on. The more dark-adapted your eyes are, the better.
• Dress appropriately. It will be chilly out there.
