Dorothy Canfield Fisher and Arlington

Local Arlington history has been strongly influenced by the contributions of the Canfield family. As one of the earliest families to move from Connecticut to Arlington in the 1760s, Canfields played a central role in settlement, commerce, and industrialization. The May 21st meeting of the Arlington Historical Society will explore some of this history starting at 2:00 p.m. in the Martha Canfield Library meeting room.

One of the best known and respected Canfields is writer and humanitarian Dorothy Canfield Fisher. Her support and ability to organize local talent was often taken for granted as were many of her behind-the-scenes contributions. More recently her contributions have been questioned based on the stigma associated with the eugenics movement in Vermont. Today's program will present family background, identify their contributions to our communities, and hopefully provide an opportunity for residents to share their experiences and memories.
