"Elite Women in the Business of Slavery"
Ethan Allen Homestead Museum – Sunday, May 21 at 2:00 PM

After George Washington died, widowed Martha Washington supported herself, in part, through the unpaid labor of her enslaved workers. Same with Patrick Henry's sister Annie Henry Christian. Never-married Kate McCall of Virginia did similarly. This presentation will explore how these socially elite women of the revolutionary & early federal eras participated in plantation and commercial enterprises through the institution of slavery, and the consequences therein.

...and what does that have to do with Ethan Allen's eldest surviving daughter Lucy Caroline Allen Hitchcock? Join the presentation to find out!

The talk will be onsite but also available via Zoom. Go to www.ethanallenhomestead.org to register.

About the Speaker:
