Mothers' Day Concert by NEK Community Orchestra

What could be better than an orchestral feast that includes not only famous composers like Mozart, Satie and Vaughn Williams, but also lesser known—but equally accomplished--composers such as Lully, Fletcher, Newbold and Price?

The North East Kingdom Community Orchestra's spring concert on May 14 will span 400 years of the world's best orchestral music. The community orchestra, now in its 19th season, will be under the baton of guest conductor Lou Kosma, music director of the Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra and a former (36 years) member of the NY Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. NEKCO members hale from Albany, VT to Barnet, from Hardwick to Monroe, NH.

"With music being such a vital enrichment of our lives, an all-inclusive ensemble is the most critical concept," said NEKCO music director Jason Bergman. "The program selection is steered by the diversity of skills as much as by the aesthetics."

The composition by Vaughn Williams, "Intrada" from his Concerto Grosso was specifically written with three or more alternative parts for each instrument, to accommodate a range of skill, from beginners to advanced. We are joined by participants from Catamount Arts' EPIC program, which introduces elementary and middle school students to string instruments and ensemble playing.

Admission is by donation and the concert will be followed by a reception with light refreshments in the lobby.
