Branching Out Spring Author Talk Series - Tuesday, May 9th - 7pm - Rebecca Wallick
While still working as a (recovering) family law attorney, in 2000 Rebecca began plotting her escape by attending nonfiction writing courses. That led to publication of freelance magazine articles and eventually, her first book, Growing Up Boeing: The Early Jet Age Through the Eyes of a Test Pilot's Daughter (2014). A contributing editor at The Bark magazine from 2004-2019, Rebecca has also had articles published in Aloft (Museum of Flight), Flight Journal, UltraRunner, Seattle, and CityDog magazines. Born and raised in Seattle, Rebecca spent 15 years living in Idaho's Salmon River Mountains before moving to Cabot in 2021.
Rebecca's talk focuses on a period in aviation history, 1950s – 1980s, when Boeing's pilots and engineers designed, tested, and certified the early commercial jets (707 – 767). Her father, Lew Wallick, played a significant role, becoming Boeing's Chief Test Pilot and Director of Flight Test. Rebecca covers significant first flights and aggressive testing to gain FAA certification, ensuring the airplanes were safe for airlines and passengers. Her presentation includes historic photos from Boeing Archives and her personal collection, and concludes with a 20-minute video of old Boeing Flight Test film clips, narrated by test pilots and illustrating (often dramatically) some of the tests the airplanes endured.
