Hello Richmond!!
Have you picked up your Green Up trash bags yet for Green Up day on May 7th? They are just inside the side door to the Town Office, next to the post office. Rolls of bags are there by the map of Richmond. Please take the number of bags you think you can fill. I am hopeful there will be enough to go around.
WHERE DO YOU PLAN TO PICK UP TRASH?
Last I checked--Saturday evening--there were quite a few names on the sheet by the Green Up map in the Town Office entryway. Please also indicate where you will be working by using the erasable markers on the plastic-coated map to mark the stretch of road you will be cleaning up.
For those who have not communicated your Green Up plan, please go to the Town Office and mark it on the road map and sign in on that sheet posted next to the map. Leaving your contact info, too, will help people who want to work together with others. If you can't go to the Town Office to share your plans, please call the Town Clerk's Office (434-2221) with your info, and someone there will mark on the map and sheet for you. You can also email me, ecwright1414@gmail.com, and I will post your plans for you.
And, there's the Green Up phone app too. Share with us your plans in the way that works best for you.
HAZARDOUS WASTE
If any household hazardous waste or paint is found by roadsides or otherwise cleaned up as "litter" during our Green Up Day activities, it needs to be kept separate from any Green Up Day litter disposed as trash. The Chittenden Solid Waste District (CWSD) will provide safe, no-cost disposal of Green Up Day hazardous waste in two ways:
1. If you find hazardous waste as you clean up the roadsides, please leave it visible, outside any bag, and next to trash bags to be picked up.
You can also help the Road Crew by taking take the hazardous waste along with the bags of trash you collect to our Town Garage up at the top of Thompson Road.
Individuals who find hazardous materials can also bring the materials to CWSD as they normally would by making an appointment. (https://cswd.net/chittenden-county-solid-waste-facilities/environmental-depot/) There is never a fee for Chittenden County residents and it's a great opportunity to get those pesticides, old paint, and other nasty materials out of their own garage or basement at the same time.
2. Town or City Public Works departments or sponsoring businesses can choose to aggregate hazardous waste collected on Green Up Day and take it to CWSD with an appointment. (https://cswd.net/chittenden-county-solid-waste-facilities/environmental-depot/)
BIG TRASH ALONG THE RIVER PATH
Linda Parent received a report about a lot of large junk that will take some effort to remove--stove, metal and barrels--at the back side of the town park, the far, downriver end. I am hoping a group of Richmond residents can volunteer to pull this out to where a truck could pick it up, or take it all themselves to the Town Garage on Thompson Road. Please contact me (ecwright1414@gmail.com, 802-734-7034) if you and others plan to do this work. This would be tremendous service!
MANY THANKS!
Thank you, in advance, for working to clean Richmond's roadside trash. Even a small effort, by each Richmond resident who is able, for a short stretch of time adds up with many hands helping in our town! If you can, please encourage others to get out there too. And it does not have to be right on Saturday, May 7th.
Let's make this Green Up successful, fun and safe. Extra safe! Remember your gloves, long pants, boots and bright clothing. And carefully watch for oncoming traffic, ticks, and sharp and hazardous trash.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
