On Thursday, May 4th from 7 to 10 pm, All Souls Interfaith Gathering in Shelburne will be hosting a concert and lecture with Jurij Fedynskyj.
Jurij Fedynskyj, is a Ukrainian American who has resided in Ukraine for the past 23 years. He is a musician, researcher, and luthier who, for decades has been reviving the lost music, cultural and spiritual traditions of the Ukrainian Kobzar. Kobzars were traveling musicians, storytellers, and spiritual leaders who for centuries would travel throughout Ukraine spreading their art and wisdom. With the rise of Soviet power and subsequent control over Ukraine, the Kobzars were killed, their instruments destroyed, and their traditions almost forgotten. Jurij and his colleagues work to recreate the lost, traditional instruments and art of the Kobzars, including the kobza, the bandura, and torban.
Jurij has witnessed the current war in Ukraine first-hand. When Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, he and his fellow musicians performed at checkpoints, barracks, and shelters. Where possible, his guild performed for civilians and soldiers alike. Jurij is now touring North America, sharing Ukraine's history through these historic songs which convey and have preserved the deep, national character of Ukraine.
This is a free cultural event and all donations collected will go to the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Poltava Kobzar Guild.
All Souls Interfaith Gathering is located at 291 Old Bostwick Farm Rd, Shelburne, VT 05482. The Concert begins at 7 pm, Thursday, May 4th.
